What does Jeremiah 17:10 mean?

God knows the deepest parts of who we are, not just our outward actions or the image we present to others. This verse tells us that he examines both our thoughts and our motivations, the things we wrestle with in private and the intentions behind what we do. The promise here is that God responds to us based on our actual selves, not on pretense, which means nothing is hidden from him and nothing needs to be. That's both sobering and, for many of us, deeply comforting: we don't have to perform or hide our genuine struggles, because the God who sees us completely is also the God described throughout Scripture as merciful and patient.
