What does Jeremiah 16:2 mean?

God commands Jeremiah not to marry or have children as a sign to the people of Jerusalem. This wasn't about Jeremiah's personal preferences, but a living message: his unmarried, childless state would remind the people that the coming destruction was so severe that normal life and family would be stripped away. In a culture where family was everything, Jeremiah's solitary life was meant to shake people awake to the seriousness of what was coming. It's a hard calling, but it shows how God sometimes asks his messengers to sacrifice deeply so their very lives become a warning and a plea for repentance.
