Jeremiah 16:10
“It will happen, when you tell this people all these words, and they ask you, ‘Why has Yahweh pronounced all this great evil against us?’ or ‘What is our iniquity? or ‘What is our sin that we have committed against Yahweh our God?’”
What does Jeremiah 16:10 mean?
Jeremiah is describing a conversation he knows will happen: people will hear his warnings about judgment and push back, asking God why this is happening to them. They'll claim innocence or confusion, as if they haven't done anything to deserve such consequences. It's a deeply human reaction, the kind of "why me?" question that rises up when we face hard seasons we didn't see coming. What makes this passage poignant is that Jeremiah already knows people will ask these questions even though they've turned away from God repeatedly. They've genuinely lost sight of their own choices and their distance from him. Sometimes when life gets difficult, we need help seeing the connection between our direction and our circumstances, not in a harsh way, but with honesty and hope that returning to God still matters.
