Jeremiah 14:9
“Why should you be like a scared man, as a mighty man who can’t save? Yet you, Yahweh, are in the middle of us, and we are called by your name. Don’t leave us.”
What does Jeremiah 14:9 mean?
Jeremiah is pleading with God on behalf of a desperate people, using language that cuts right to the heart of fear. He's essentially asking why God would act powerless when He has all power, like a warrior frozen by panic who can't defend those counting on him. The people are in crisis (a severe drought, in the historical context), and Jeremiah reminds God of their covenant relationship, saying "we are called by your name" as a way of appealing to God's own honor and investment in them. The prayer isn't demanding or arrogant, though.
