Jeremiah 14:15
“Therefore Yahweh says concerning the prophets who prophesy in my name, but I didn’t send them, yet they say, ‘Sword and famine will not be in this land.’ Those prophets will be consumed by sword and famine.”
What does Jeremiah 14:15 mean?
Jeremiah lived during a terrifying time when Jerusalem faced invasion and collapse, and false prophets kept telling people "everything will be fine, God won't let anything happen." Jeremiah is delivering God's hard word that these comforting lies won't protect anyone, and those who spread false hope will experience the very suffering they denied was coming. There's something important here about the difference between real comfort and false comfort. Real faith doesn't mean pretending bad things won't happen, it means trusting God through what actually comes. The false prophets were popular precisely because people wanted reassurance, but their reassurance was disconnected from reality. Sometimes the most loving thing isn't to tell people what they want to hear, but to tell them the truth so they can actually prepare and respond wisely.
