“If you say in your heart, “Why have these things come on me?” Your skirts are uncovered because of the greatness of your iniquity, and your heels suffer violence.”
What does Jeremiah 13:22 mean?
This passage describes the painful consequences that come when a person or community turns away from God. Jeremiah is speaking to Judah, using the image of exposure and shame to convey how their own choices have left them vulnerable and unprotected. The "why" question reflects that moment when we're finally forced to face reality, when we can no longer ignore the connection between our actions and our suffering. What makes this verse especially honest is that it doesn't offer false comfort. It's saying: if you find yourself in a broken place, look back at the choices you made. That's difficult to hear when we're hurting, but there's also freedom in it.
