Jeremiah 10:8
“But they are together brutish and foolish, instructed by idols! It is just wood.”
What does Jeremiah 10:8 mean?
Jeremiah is describing people who've turned to carved idols for guidance and comfort, only to find themselves trapped in spiritual emptiness. He's saying that worshipping something made by human hands (wood shaped into a god-like form) actually makes people less wise, not more, because they're trusting in something that has no real power or understanding. The harshness here comes from compassion: the prophet is frustrated because people are settling for dead objects when they could have a living relationship with God who actually knows and cares for them. Whether we're dealing with literal wooden idols or modern substitutes we pour our hope into (money, status, approval), the point remains the same: putting our trust in anything without real substance leaves us spiritually impoverished.
