James 5:17
“Elijah was a man with a nature like ours, and he prayed earnestly that it might not rain, and it didn’t rain on the earth for three years and six months.”
What does James 5:17 mean?
James is reminding us that Elijah wasn't superhuman or specially privileged in some mysterious way—he was simply a person like you and me, with the same struggles and limitations we all face. Yet when he prayed with real intensity and faith, God actually answered in a dramatic way, withholding rain from the land for years. The point isn't that we should expect such spectacular results from our prayers, but rather that an ordinary person's genuine, heartfelt prayer matters enormously to God and can bring real change. If Elijah's prayers had power despite his ordinariness, then our prayers do too, whatever our circumstances or doubts might be.
