What does James 4:7 mean?

Submitting to God means aligning yourself with his character and purposes, which creates a solid foundation for your spiritual life. When you resist the devil (temptation, destructive patterns, anything pulling you away from what's good), you're not just white-knuckling your way through hardship alone. The promise here is that resistance itself has power, because you're backed by God's strength, not your own willpower. The image of the devil fleeing suggests that evil doesn't have an interest in sticking around where it's being actively opposed. This doesn't mean temptation disappears forever or life becomes effortless, but it does mean you're not powerless in the struggle. When you genuinely turn toward God rather than toward what's harmful, you'll notice real shifts in what has power over you.
