What does James 3:1 mean?

James is warning that teaching others about faith is a serious responsibility, not something to pursue for status or without genuine calling. Teachers shape how people understand God and live their lives, so they'll answer for that influence more strictly than others. This doesn't mean no one should teach, but rather that people should approach the role with humility and careful thought about whether they're truly called and equipped to guide others. If you're feeling the weight of helping others understand their faith, that heaviness itself might be a sign you're taking it seriously.
