James 2:9
“But if you show partiality, you commit sin, being convicted by the law as transgressors.”
What does James 2:9 mean?
When we treat people differently based on wealth, appearance, or status, we're breaking God's standard of love. The letter of James is addressing a real problem in early churches where wealthy visitors were getting better seats while poor people were pushed aside, and he's saying this favoritism is actually sin. The point isn't that we have to feel the same about everyone, but that our actions should reflect equal dignity and respect for all people because they all matter equally to God. If we're honest with ourselves, most of us know when we're doing this, because our conscience convicts us.
