James 1:19
“So, then, my beloved brothers, let every man be swift to hear, slow to speak, and slow to anger;”
What does James 1:19 mean?
James offers us a beautifully simple formula for how to treat one another. Being quick to listen means we genuinely pay attention to what others are saying before jumping in with our own thoughts, which shows respect and often helps us understand someone's real concern rather than what we assumed it was. Speaking slowly, or speaking less, gives us time to think and usually leads to words that actually help instead of words we regret. And anger that rushes in quickly tends to damage relationships, while restraint gives us space to respond with wisdom instead of just emotion. This advice hits especially hard for those of us in conflict or going through misunderstandings with others. If you're in a rough season relationally, this verse invites you to pause and listen first, knowing that slowing down your responses is actually a form of love.
