Isaiah 9:7

Of the increase of his government and of peace there shall be no end, on David’s throne, and on his kingdom, to establish it, and to uphold it with justice and with righteousness from that time on, even forever. The zeal of Yahweh of Armies will perform this.

What does Isaiah 9:7 mean?

This passage describes a ruler whose influence and peaceful reign will grow endlessly, establishing a kingdom that stands on justice and righteousness forever. The prophet Isaiah is speaking about someone who will sit on David's throne (connecting to the ancient Jewish royal line) and whose government won't crumble or shrink, but rather expand and deepen in its commitment to fair and right rule. The final line emphasizes that God's own passionate dedication makes this possible, not human effort alone. For readers facing uncertainty or injustice in this world, the verse offers hope that there is ultimately a source of authority committed to setting things right, and that commitment is inexhaustible and eternal.
