What does Isaiah 8:1 mean?
God told Isaiah to write a shocking name on a tablet where people would see it: "Maher Shalal Hash Baz," which means "quick to the plunder, swift to the spoil." This was Isaiah's way of publicly announcing God's judgment, long before the events would happen. By making the prophecy visible and giving his own son this name, Isaiah was declaring that Assyria would soon come and strip the land, and that God had already decided this course. It's a strange and uncomfortable way to deliver a message, but it shows how seriously God wanted people to pay attention to the warning about what was coming.
