““Ask a sign of Yahweh your God; ask it either in the depth, or in the height above.””
What does Isaiah 7:11 mean?
God is inviting King Ahaz to ask for a miracle, any miracle at all, as proof that God will keep His promise to protect Judah from its enemies. The offer to ask "in the depth, or in the height above" means Ahaz can request a sign from anywhere, from the deepest places to the highest heavens, emphasizing that nothing is too difficult for God. This was meant to strengthen Ahaz's faith during a terrifying moment when his kingdom felt surrounded by threats. What makes this verse poignant is that Ahaz refuses the offer, claiming false humility by saying he won't test God. Yet his real problem wasn't faith, it was pride, so instead of accepting reassurance, he turns to human alliances and earthly power. Sometimes we do the same thing, declining God's invitation to trust Him because we've already decided on our own solution.
