What does Isaiah 65:5 mean?
God is expressing his profound irritation with people who use their spiritual status as a weapon to separate themselves from others. The people Isaiah describes aren't just trying to be faithful, they're actively pushing others away and claiming moral superiority, which they see as evidence of their own holiness. God says such behavior is deeply offensive to him, burning in his nostrils like acrid smoke that won't go away. This matters because it reveals something fundamental about how God values relationship: he cares far more about how we treat the people around us than about performing righteousness for an audience.
