Isaiah 63:17
“O Yahweh, why do you make us wander from your ways, and harden our heart from your fear? Return for your servants’ sake, the tribes of your inheritance.”
What does Isaiah 63:17 mean?
Isaiah is crying out in honest frustration, asking why God seems to be pushing his people away just when they need him most. This is a lament, not a question expecting a comfortable answer, and it reflects a real tension many of us feel: when we're struggling to stay close to God, does he distance himself from us, or do we drift away on our own? The prophet isn't blaming God exactly so much as appealing to him, reminding God that these are his people, his inheritance. The word "fear" here means reverence and closeness, not terror. Isaiah is essentially saying, "We've lost our way and our sense of connection to you—please come back to us because we belong to you." It's the prayer of someone who recognizes that restoration can only come from God's side, even while acknowledging that the people themselves have wandered into hardness of heart.
