What does Isaiah 61:5 mean?
In Isaiah's vision of restoration after exile, this verse describes what abundance and peace will look like for God's people. Instead of doing all the labor themselves, the community will have help from outsiders who choose to serve alongside them. It's a picture of such blessing that others will want to participate in the prosperity God brings. This doesn't mean exploitation or second-class status for foreigners. Rather, it reflects the ancient world's understanding of how a flourishing nation would attract workers, but more importantly, it shows Isaiah imagining a future so restored and generous that there's room for everyone to benefit. The point is about the security and fruitfulness God promises to his people, and how that blessing naturally extends outward to include others in the work.
