““Foreigners will build up your walls, and their kings will serve you: for in my wrath I struck you, but in my favor I have had mercy on you.”
What does Isaiah 60:10 mean?
When Isaiah wrote this, Jerusalem had been destroyed and its people carried into exile. This verse speaks to a stunning reversal: the very nations who once seemed powerful against God's people would one day help rebuild what was broken. It's a promise that restoration wouldn't come through their own strength alone, but through God's orchestrated favor. The shift from "my wrath I struck you" to "in my favor I have had mercy on you" is the heart of the message. God acknowledges the pain they experienced wasn't random or eternal—it had a purpose in calling them back to him. Now comes the mercy side: not only will they be restored, but outsiders will contribute their resources and respect to make it happen. In the deepest seasons of exile and loss, this would have been almost unimaginable hope to hear.
