Isaiah 6:13
“If there is a tenth left in it, that also will in turn be consumed: as a terebinth, and as an oak, whose stock remains when they are felled; so the holy seed is its stock.””
What does Isaiah 6:13 mean?
Isaiah spoke this prophecy during dark times in Judah's history, when the kingdom faced destruction and exile. The image is stark: God's judgment will sweep through the land like fire consuming a forest, until only a tenth remains, and then even that remnant will face hardship. But here's where hope breaks through the devastation. When a great tree is cut down, its stump and roots stay alive in the soil, capable of sprouting new growth. That's what Isaiah means by the "holy seed" being the stock, or root system. Even when judgment seems total and the land appears barren, God preserves a faithful remnant, a living root from which something new can eventually grow. This speaks to anyone who feels like circumstances have stripped everything away. The promise isn't that suffering won't happen or that loss isn't real, but that God's purposes can't be completely destroyed. A remnant survives, and from that small, hidden place of faith and survival, restoration becomes possible. The deepest root of God's purpose can't be cut down.
