What does Isaiah 51:8 mean?

God is reminding his people that their enemies and the things that oppose them won't last. Just as moths and worms destroy fabric from the inside out, God's opponents will be consumed and fade away, no matter how powerful they seem right now. Meanwhile, God's own character, his justice, and the rescue he offers will endure permanently, passing down through every generation that comes after. This is meant to be deeply comforting: whatever is arrayed against you today is temporary, but God's faithfulness and care are eternal.
