Isaiah 51:17
“Awake, awake! Stand up, Jerusalem, you who have drunk from Yahweh’s hand the cup of his wrath. You have drunken the bowl of the cup of staggering, and drained it.”
What does Isaiah 51:17 mean?
Jerusalem had endured devastating judgment, exile, and suffering, and this passage calls the city to wake up from despair and hopelessness. The image of drinking from God's cup describes how fully Jerusalem experienced the consequences of turning away from him, with the staggering sensation emphasizing the weight and confusion of that punishment. But notice the call comes with an imperative to "stand up," suggesting that the worst has passed and restoration is beginning. This was written to people who felt forgotten and crushed, reminding them that their suffering, though real and complete, had an endpoint, and God was calling them to rise again.
