Isaiah 50:1
“Yahweh says, “Where is the bill of your mother’s divorce, with which I have put her away? or to which of my creditors have I sold you? Behold, you were sold for your iniquities, and your mother was put away for your transgressions.”
What does Isaiah 50:1 mean?
God is speaking here to people who felt abandoned, asking them to examine the real reason for their separation from him. He's pointing out that he didn't divorce them casually or sell them off to settle a debt, the way a creditor might claim a debtor's children. Instead, their own choices and sins created the distance between them and God, not any failure on God's part to remain faithful. The "bill of divorce" was a legal document in ancient Israel, so God's question carries weight: "Show me where I formally abandoned you." He's gently confronting the people's victim mentality while also taking responsibility for consequences they've experienced as a result of their wrongdoing. This is meant to wake them up to the truth that they can return, that the separation isn't permanent or one-sided.
