Isaiah 5:21
“Woe to those who are wise in their own eyes, and prudent in their own sight!”
What does Isaiah 5:21 mean?
Isaiah is warning against a particular kind of blindness: the certainty that we already have everything figured out. When we're convinced of our own wisdom, we stop listening to others, stop questioning ourselves, and become unable to see where we're actually going wrong. This attitude closes us off from growth, from correction, and from the humility that real understanding requires. The "woe" here isn't a curse so much as a compassionate heads-up, like watching someone confidently walk toward a cliff they can't see. The prophet is inviting people back toward wisdom that comes from openness, curiosity, and the recognition that we might be missing something important. That kind of humility, oddly enough, is where actual wisdom begins.
