Isaiah 46:6
“Some pour out gold from the bag, and weigh silver in the balance. They hire a goldsmith, and he makes it a god. They fall down— yes, they worship.”
What does Isaiah 46:6 mean?
In Isaiah's time, wealth was often converted into physical idols carved from precious metals. The prophet is describing people who spend enormous resources creating gods with their own hands, then bow down to worship what they themselves made. It's a gentle but pointed observation about how we can pour our energy and money into things we've invented ourselves, only to then serve them as if they were ultimate sources of truth and security. The passage invites us to notice where we might be doing something similar today, whether through actual religious objects or through modern substitutes. We build something we think will satisfy us, invest ourselves heavily in it, and then find ourselves devoted to serving it rather than it serving us. There's tenderness in Isaiah naming this, not condemning but simply showing us the circular logic of self-made fulfillment.
