Isaiah 42:20

You see many things, but don’t observe. His ears are open, but he doesn’t listen.

What does Isaiah 42:20 mean?

God is describing someone who has all the capacity to understand what's happening around them, yet chooses not to. They have eyes that work and ears that function, but they're spiritually asleep, going through life without really taking in what God is trying to show them. It's a gentle but pointed reminder that simply having the ability to see and hear isn't enough, we have to actually pay attention and be willing to let what we learn change us. This can speak to any of us in moments when we've become numb to God's work in our lives or closed ourselves off to what He's trying to teach us, even when the evidence is right in front of us.
