What does Isaiah 42:17 mean?

When people put their faith in things they've made with their own hands, claiming these objects hold ultimate power or answers, they're building on something that can never deliver. The prophet is describing the disappointment that comes when we worship what we've created—whether literal idols or the modern equivalents, like money, status, or control. God is saying that turning away from what's real and true toward false sources of security will leave us empty and ashamed. There's both a warning and an invitation here: the pain of misplaced trust points us toward placing our hope somewhere that actually holds us up.
