What does Isaiah 42:1 mean?

God is speaking here about someone he has chosen and equipped for a sacred purpose. This servant is upheld and beloved, and God's Spirit rests on him to give him power and wisdom for his task. His mission is to bring justice to the nations, meaning he'll work to establish what is right and fair across the world, not just for one people group. If you've ever felt called to something bigger than yourself, or wondered what it means to be chosen by God for a purpose, this verse speaks to that longing and reminds us that God equips those he calls with his very Spirit.
