What does Isaiah 41:4 mean?

God is declaring that He alone has orchestrated human history from start to finish, calling forth each generation according to His purpose. The emphasis on being "first and with the last" means He existed before time began and will remain present through all of history until its end. It's a powerful statement that nothing catches God off-guard or falls outside His awareness, which can be deeply comforting when our own circumstances feel uncertain or chaotic. This message comes in a section of Isaiah meant to reassure Israel during exile that God hasn't abandoned them, and that same reassurance extends to anyone wondering if their struggles matter or are noticed.
