Isaiah 40:12
“Who has measured the waters in the hollow of his hand, and marked off the sky with his span, and calculated the dust of the earth in a measuring basket, and weighed the mountains in scales, and the hills in a balance?”
What does Isaiah 40:12 mean?
God is so immeasurably vast that he holds all the oceans in his palm, stretches his hand across the entire sky, and weighs mountains and hills as easily as we'd measure out flour. This poetic image appears at the beginning of Isaiah's message of comfort to exiles, reminding them that the God who cares about their suffering is the same God who sustains the entire cosmos. The point isn't that we're insignificant, but rather that if God is intimate enough with creation to measure and know every detail of it, he is certainly intimate enough to know and care about what you're facing right now.
