“For Sheol can’t praise you. Death can’t celebrate you. Those who go down into the pit can’t hope for your truth.”
What does Isaiah 38:18 mean?
King Hezekiah speaks these words after recovering from a deadly illness, wrestling with what it means to worship God when facing mortality. He's expressing a hard truth that was deeply felt in ancient Israel: the dead, separated from the land of the living, cannot sing God's praises or experience his goodness in the way the living can. This isn't meant to be hopeless, though. Rather, it's Hezekiah's way of saying that praising God, celebrating him, and holding onto his promises are privileges of the living.
