Isaiah 37:27
“Therefore their inhabitants had little power. They were dismayed and confounded. They were like the grass of the field, and like the green herb, like the grass on the housetops, and like a field before its crop has grown.”
What does Isaiah 37:27 mean?
When a nation loses its strength, Isaiah suggests, its people become fragile and confused, like plants that wither before they can take root. The image moves from grass in a field to herbs to the thin vegetation that sometimes sprouts on flat rooftops, ending with a field too young to bear a harvest, each picture showing something temporary and easily destroyed. This was written during a siege when an invading army threatened Jerusalem, and Isaiah used these comparisons to help people see how powerless the enemy would ultimately become in God's hands. The point isn't really about plants, though, it's about how quickly human power crumbles when it stands alone, and how our confidence in military might or our own strength can vanish like morning dew.
