“and have cast their gods into the fire; for they were no gods, but the work of men’s hands, wood and stone; therefore they have destroyed them.”
What does Isaiah 37:19 mean?
King Hezekiah is reminding God of something the Assyrian army has already done, and he's making a crucial point: the gods those nations trusted in were just carved objects made by human craftsmen, not real powers at all. Because they weren't truly divine, they couldn't save anyone, and so they've been destroyed. Hezekiah is essentially saying that the God of Israel is fundamentally different, not made of wood or stone but alive and real. It's a prayer of confidence in the middle of siege and terror, reminding himself (and us) that what we trust in matters deeply, and that things people treat with religious reverence might actually be empty.
