What does Isaiah 34:8 mean?
God's judgment isn't random or petty, but purposeful and tied to His commitment to His people. Isaiah is speaking to those who felt abandoned, whose land had been overrun and whose faith was wavering, promising them that God sees what has been done against them and will ultimately set things right. The "day of vengeance" and "year of recompense" are poetic ways of saying that God's justice will come, not in scattered moments but as a decisive, complete response. This can feel heavy if you're reading it as a threat, but it's actually meant as comfort: it says the God who loves you is not indifferent to suffering and injustice. He remembers. He acts. That doesn't solve the pain of waiting in hard seasons, but it does mean your hurt isn't invisible to Him.
