What does Isaiah 33:11 mean?
This is Isaiah's vivid way of describing what happens when people scheme and plan destructively, only to have their own plans destroy them. The "chaff" and "stubble" represent something that looks substantial but is actually worthless and easily burned away, like the useless leftover parts of grain after harvest. When Isaiah says their own breath is fire that devours them, he's saying that the very words and schemes they produce will ultimately consume and ruin them, turning inward like a fire that burns the person who started it. The image speaks to a truth many of us recognize from life: when we build on deception, anger, or schemes to hurt others, we usually end up hurt ourselves.
