Isaiah 33:1
“Woe to you who destroy, but you weren’t destroyed; and who betray, but nobody betrayed you! When you have finished destroying, you will be destroyed; and when you have finished betrayal, you will be betrayed.”
What does Isaiah 33:1 mean?
Isaiah spoke these words to the Assyrian empire, which was terrorizing smaller nations through conquest and treachery, yet remained unchecked itself. The prophet announces that this imbalance will not last forever, that those who build their power on destruction and betrayal will eventually face the same treatment they've inflicted on others. This is a hard comfort for those being wronged: it declares that injustice has a limit. The universe doesn't reward cruelty indefinitely, and oppressors don't escape the consequences of their own methods.
