What does Isaiah 31:8 mean?
When Isaiah wrote this, Assyria was the superpower threatening God's people, and many felt helpless against such a mighty enemy. The prophet is saying that their deliverance won't come through human military might or clever strategy, but through God's direct intervention. The repetition about the sword emphasizes that it's God's action, not ours, that will turn the tide. This message offered hope to a frightened community: sometimes the obstacles that seem too big for us to handle are exactly what God can address, and our role is often simply to trust rather than to muscle our way through.
