Isaiah 3:5
“The people will be oppressed, everyone by another, and everyone by his neighbor. The child will behave himself proudly against the old man, and the wicked against the honorable.”
What does Isaiah 3:5 mean?
When a society loses its moral foundation, the natural order of respect and care breaks down in painful ways. Isaiah is describing what happens when people turn away from God: the strong prey on the weak, the young mock their elders instead of honoring them, and decency gets trampled by those willing to act ruthlessly. This wasn't just abstract prophecy for Isaiah's original audience facing collapse, though it was that. It speaks to something we still recognize today: when communities lose their shared values and accountability, vulnerability increases for everyone.
