“They also reel with wine, and stagger with strong drink. The priest and the prophet reel with strong drink. They are swallowed up by wine. They stagger with strong drink. They err in vision. They stumble in judgment.”
What does Isaiah 28:7 mean?
Isaiah's description here is brutal: the very leaders who should be guiding Israel spiritually and politically are drowning in alcohol and, as a result, completely unreliable. When priests and prophets are intoxicated, they can't discern God's truth or lead wisely, so they stumble through their sacred duties in a haze. What makes this especially serious is that these aren't ordinary citizens—they're people entrusted with interpreting God's will and making decisions that affect everyone. Their impairment isn't just a personal problem; it's a spiritual and social crisis.
