“Does he who plows to sow plow continually? Does he keep turning the soil and breaking the clods?”
What does Isaiah 28:24 mean?
A farmer doesn't plow endlessly, the prophet reminds us, but only as much as the work requires. Once the soil is ready, the plowing stops and it's time to plant. Isaiah is building toward a point about God's discipline: like a farmer who adjusts his methods to the season, God doesn't keep hammering away with correction for its own sake. There's a purpose to the hard seasons we face, and they're meant to move us toward something new, not to crush us indefinitely. This verse invites us to trust that even painful seasons have an end point, and that God knows when it's time to shift from breaking up hard ground to nurturing new growth.
