What does Isaiah 21:11 mean?
Someone crying out in the darkness is asking a watchman the same urgent question twice: "How much longer until dawn?" The repetition conveys desperation, the kind of plea that comes when you're exhausted and can't bear another moment of waiting. Though Dumah and Seir are ancient place names (regions in what's now the Middle East), Isaiah is using this scene to speak about spiritual darkness and the human longing for God's deliverance. The watchman stands alert while others sleep, responsible for seeing what's coming. When someone asks him about the night, they're really asking if relief is near, if their suffering has an end in sight. Many people feel this way during their own hard seasons, calling out into uncertainty and hoping someone can tell them when the darkness will lift. Isaiah's message here reminds us that God sees our vigil in the darkness and hasn't forgotten those who wait for Him.
