What does Isaiah 21:1 mean?
Isaiah's opening line here announces a vision about Babylon, using the striking image of a sudden storm sweeping out of the desert. The "wilderness of the sea" is a poetic way of describing the region around Babylon, which lay in lowlands near water and seemed barren and threatening to distant observers. He's telling us that judgment is coming like a violent whirlwind, not gradually or quietly, but with unstoppable force.
