Isaiah 20:6
“The inhabitants of this coast land will say in that day, ‘Behold, this is our expectation, where we fled for help to be delivered from the king of Assyria. And we, how will we escape?’””
What does Isaiah 20:6 mean?
When Isaiah wrote this, Assyria was the terrifying superpower of the ancient world, and smaller nations around it were desperately looking for allies who could protect them. This verse captures the moment when people realize their chosen refuge (Egypt, in this case) has failed them completely. They had fled there hoping for rescue, only to watch Egypt crumble under Assyrian pressure. Now they face the awful question: if our backup plan didn't work, what hope do we have left? There's something deeply human in that panicked "how will we escape?" It's the sound of people confronting how little control they actually have. Isaiah's point isn't to mock them but to show what happens when we put our trust in human power and earthly alliances instead of in God. The verse invites us to ask ourselves what we're actually relying on when trouble comes, and whether we've anchored our hope in something that can genuinely hold us.
