“Stop trusting in man, whose breath is in his nostrils; for of what account is he?”
What does Isaiah 2:22 mean?
Isaiah invites us to reconsider where we place our confidence. When we lean too heavily on human leaders, institutions, or the approval of others, we're building on something fragile: a person who is mortal and limited, whose very life depends on each breath. The prophet isn't saying people are worthless or that we should ignore good advice, but rather that ultimate trust and hope belong elsewhere. This lands especially hard when we've been disappointed by someone we believed in, or when we realize how easily human power and promises can crumble. The question "of what account is he?" pushes us gently toward recognizing that only God offers the kind of reliable foundation our souls actually need.
