What does Isaiah 14:12 mean?
This passage describes a dramatic reversal of fortune, moving from the highest place imaginable to the lowest. The "morning star" and "son of the dawn" are images of brightness and elevation, suggesting someone who once held tremendous power and influence. The repetition of "how" emphasizes the shock and tragedy of the fall, making it feel sudden and complete. While this verse is often interpreted spiritually as depicting Satan's fall from heaven, in its original context Isaiah was addressing the king of Babylon, contrasting his former pride with his coming humiliation.
