What does Isaiah 10:18 mean?
God is describing how completely He will strip away Assyria's strength and resources, the things that made the nation feel proud and powerful. Just as a forest and fertile land can be entirely consumed by fire, so too will the empire's might be devastated, affecting both its people and its substance. The final image is of a soldier who carries the army's banner collapsing in exhaustion or defeat, a picture of total breakdown that would have been shocking to Isaiah's original audience, since a fallen standard bearer meant the army's morale and unity were shattered. The point is that no earthly power, no matter how impressive it looks from the outside, stands against God's judgment.
