Isaiah 1:23
“Your princes are rebellious, and companions of thieves. Everyone loves bribes, and follows after rewards. They don’t judge the fatherless, neither does the cause of the widow come to them.”
What does Isaiah 1:23 mean?
Isaiah speaks here to a nation whose leaders have abandoned their most basic responsibilities. The princes and judges have become corrupt, taking bribes and protecting themselves rather than defending the vulnerable. In ancient Israel, as in many societies, caring for orphans and widows was considered the truest measure of a just society, since these people had no power to protect themselves. What makes this critique so sharp is that Isaiah isn't describing occasional lapses but a total inversion of justice. The leaders have become "companions of thieves" not because they steal themselves, but because they enable theft by refusing to hold anyone accountable.
