What does Hosea 9:12 mean?
This is one of the hardest passages in Hosea, spoken during a time when Israel had turned away from God through idolatry and injustice. The prophet is describing the consequences of that separation, saying that even the care parents invest in raising their children won't protect them from the catastrophe coming because of the nation's broken relationship with God. The deeper meaning cuts to something painful but important: when a community consistently rejects God's way, there's a real loss. Children inherit the chaos and consequences of their parents' choices. But the final phrase, "woe also to them when I depart from them," suggests that God's absence itself is the deepest pain, not just external judgment.
