“I found Israel like grapes in the wilderness. I saw your fathers as the first ripe in the fig tree at its first season; but they came to Baal Peor, and consecrated themselves to the shameful thing, and became abominable like that which they loved.”
What does Hosea 9:10 mean?
God is remembering how precious Israel once was to him, like discovering something rare and delicious in an unexpected place. The fig and grape imagery suggests early promise and natural beauty, a people he cherished from their beginning. But then came a painful turning point: they abandoned their devotion to God and turned to Baal Peor, a false god associated with fertility rituals and shame.
