Hosea 5:2
“The rebels are deep in slaughter; but I discipline all of them.”
What does Hosea 5:2 mean?
God is speaking through the prophet Hosea about the people of Israel, who have turned away from him through idolatry and unfaithfulness. The "rebels" here refers to the nation's leaders and people who have gone so far into sin that it's like they're drowning in its consequences, harming themselves and others in the process. But God's response isn't to abandon them entirely, even in their rebellion. Instead, he says he will discipline them, the way a parent corrects a child out of love rather than rejection. This is a hard word wrapped in mercy. The discipline coming their way will be painful (historically, this involved invasion and exile), but it comes because God hasn't given up on them. He's still treating them as his people, still willing to correct and redirect them toward himself, rather than simply letting them spiral into destruction without response.
